Oil Filtering Basics
Simply put, clean oil in the crankcase is the best way to keep your engine running for a good, long time. Whether you are a 3000, 4000, or 7500 mile oil changer, it is the best way to extend the life of your vehicle. Oil Filter Facts • Each year the U.S. generates 425 million used automotive oil filters containing 160,000 tons of iron units and 18 million gallons of oil.1 • Recycling all the filters sold annually in the United States would result in the recovery of about 160,000 tons of steel, or enough steel to make 16 new stadiums the size of Atlanta's Turner Stadium.2 • Used oil filters can contain more than 45 percent used motor oil in weight when removed from the vehicle.3
Oil Filtering Options Changing the oil filter has been a large part of changing the oil. The disposeable paper filter has been the norm for so long in the the industry. There is a new option out there to replace those disposeable paper filters. TruFilter is challenging this with their new reuseable, efficient, environmentally safe, money saving option. Filter Ratings Paper filters are rated on an average of what they will let pass. When testing three leading paper filters it was found that the smallest particle they caught was between 9-20 microns. The largest particle allowed through the filter was between 56-300+ microns. The medical grade stainless steel cloth that TruFilter uses is rated at an absolute 35 microns, meaning nothing larger than 35 microns should pass through the material. This “absolute” rating is important because this type of filter material is also used in medical applications like blood filtration.
